The oil will drain steadily for several minutes. Allowing ample time for complete drainage helps remove as much old oil as possible. During this time, the drain plug can be cleaned with a rag to remove any metal particles or sludge that may have accumulated. Some riders tilt the motorcycle slightly to encourage additional oil to exit, though this is not always necessary. Once the flow reduces to a slow drip, the plug area can be wiped clean.
When the oil has stopped draining, the drain plug can be reinstalled. If a new crush washer is being used, it should be placed onto the plug before threading it back in. Step Three: Replacing the Oil Filter

For a spin-on filter, an oil filter wrench is used to loosen it. Turning it counterclockwise removes it. Some oil may spill from the filter, so having the drain pan positioned underneath is helpful. The old filter should be placed into the drain pan or into a plastic bag for disposal.
Before installing the new filter, it is necessary to lubricate the rubber gasket ring on the filter’s base with a small amount of fresh oil. This step helps the gasket seat properly and prevents it from sticking during future removal. The new filter can then be screwed on by hand until the gasket makes contact. With the drain plug and new filter in place, the motorcycle is ready for fresh oil. Locating the oil fill cap, usually on the top of the engine, allows access to the oil reservoir. The cap is removed, and a funnel is inserted to prevent spills. The recommended oil volume is poured in slowly, checking the level periodically. It is advisable to add slightly less than the full specified amount initially, as the oil filter may absorb some oil.
